The story is set in Jerusalem on July 14, 1099, as the city awaits an invasion by crusaders. People from different faiths—Christians, Jews, and Muslims—gather to listen to a mysterious man known as the Copt. He is a wise man who was not affiliated with any specific religion and had travelled the world to gather his knowledge. The citizens ask him questions about their fears and anxieties, as well as topics such as defeat, struggle, loyalty, love, and what the future holds. The remainder of the book is a series of parables and answers from the Copt, reflecting on timeless human values that transcend the specific historical context. The novel is presented as a translation of a manuscript originally written in Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin,

and discovered in 1974 in a cave in Cairo.
